Mukhtar Ansari, a prominent figure in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh, was born on June 20, 1963, in the Gazipur district of UP. His father, Subhanullah Ansari, was a leftist leader. Due to his clean image, Mukhtar Ansari’s father won the uncontested municipal elections in 1971. Meanwhile, his grandfather, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, was a freedom fighter and also served as the president of the All India Congress Committee.


Mukhtar Ansari’s maternal grandfather was also a well-known figure. Known as Brigadier Usman Mukhtar Ansari, he was martyred on July 3, 1948, during the war with Pakistan. He was later honored with the Mahavir Chakra. Additionally, former Vice President Hamid Ansari is also related to him as an uncle.

At one time, Mukhtar Ansari was considered a stronghold in Purvanchal. There is a long list of crimes against him. According to the Uttar Pradesh Police, a total of 52 cases are registered against Mukhtar Ansari across the country. As a result, he has been in jail for almost 16 years. The UP government has taken action against Mukhtar Ansari and confiscated his property worth 192 crores. So far, the police have arrested 95 people from his gang, out of which action is being taken under the Gangster Act against 75 people. At present, Mukhtar Ansari is in Banda Jail.

Mukhtar Ansari has contested and won two elections as a BSP candidate and two elections as an independent candidate so far. Mukhtar wields influence in districts including Mau, Ballia, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Azamgarh, and Varanasi among several others. In the 2017 Assembly elections, BSP chief Mayawati had declared Mukhtar Ansari as the candidate from Mau and his son Abbas Ansari as the candidate from Ghosi Assembly seat. Mukhtar Ansari had won from the Mau seat, but his son Abbas Ansari lost to BJP candidate Fagu Chauhan from the Ghosi seat.
