He was the Transport Minister in the government of Hemant Soren. Champai Soren has been considered one of the most trusted aides of Hemant Soren. He has been a close associate of Shibu Soren, the supreme leader of Jharkhand’s JMM. Despite touching the feet of CM Hemant Soren on many occasions, it can be estimated how significant his importance is in Jharkhand. It is also said that whether it is a matter of government or party, Hemant Soren always consults him on important issues. People also call Champai Soren the ‘Tiger of Jharkhand’.

In 1991, he won in a by-election as an independent candidate. His victory was significant because he defeated the wife of Kedavara JMM MP Krishna Mardi. Later, he won on the ticket of JMM in 1995 from Jharmumo. However, he lost the election to BJP’s Anantaram Tudu in 2000. Since then, he has been a legislator from Saraykela continuously. In 2019, he defeated BJP’s Ganesh Mahli.
